Punkt MP02 Review: Is This Punkt Phone Worth It?

The Punkt MP02 is the strictest good phone you can buy, and the strictness is the whole product. It makes calls, sends texts, shares a hotspot, and runs an encrypted messenger called Pigeon. It has no camera, no browser, and no way to install a single app.

Who the Punkt MP02 is for, and who it isn't

This phone suits people who want the decision taken away from them permanently. There is no app store, so there is no relapse. That is a narrower group than the marketing suggests.

You are the buyer if you:

• Have already deleted apps twice and reinstalled them twice
• Work at a desk with a laptop, so the web is nearby anyway
• Want a second phone for evenings, weekends, or travel
• Care about a well-made object and will keep it for years
• Want encrypted messaging without carrying a smartphone

You are not the buyer if you:

• Need turn-by-turn maps on the road
• Scan QR codes for menus, tickets, or parking
• Use WhatsApp as your main way to reach family
• Rely on two-factor codes from an authenticator app
• Want the cheapest possible way off a smartphone

In our years running consumer-electronics email, SEO, and paid search at Amazon at $200M-plus scale, the returns pattern was consistent. People rarely sent a device back for being slow. They sent it back for a job they assumed it did and it did not.

The MP02 is exactly that kind of purchase. Write down the five things you did on your phone yesterday. If two of them are impossible here, the return window will not save you.

What living with it is actually like

Daily use splits into a first hard week and then a very quiet routine. The hard part is not the missing apps. It is retraining your hands.

The first week

Typing is T9 predictive text on a physical keypad. One reviewer at Digital Camera World found it worked well in practice, while noting it feels archaic to younger users. Long replies take real effort, which quietly shortens your messages.

The menu system is a plain text list, not icons. The same review called the interface fiddly and flagged the missing volume rocker. You change volume through menus, which is annoying on a call.

The reflex problem is worse than the interface. For about five days you will pick the phone up, look at a 2.0-inch screen, and put it back down. That loop is the actual product working.

After the first week

Battery anxiety disappears. Punkt rates the 1,280 mAh cell at 4.2 hours of talk time and 180 hours of standby. The Digital Camera World reviewer got four to five days of normal use, and beyond a week on standby.

Call quality is the standout in practice. The phone uses noise-cancelling microphones and audio tuned by Kjetil Rost Nilsen. The same reviewer described clear, loud earpiece audio that held up on noisy streets.

The screen is a 2.0-inch QVGA transflective panel behind Gorilla Glass 3. Transflective means it uses ambient light rather than fighting it, so it gets easier to read in direct sun. That is the opposite of every phone you have owned.

The hotspot changes the math

The MP02 shares its 4G connection over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB. That single feature is why the phone works for people with jobs. You keep a keypad in your pocket and give your laptop data when you actually need the internet.

In practice this splits your day cleanly. Casual browsing dies because opening a laptop is a decision. Urgent browsing survives because the laptop is right there.

Pigeon

Pigeon is Punkt's encrypted messaging and calling tool. Punkt describes it as using the Signal protocol over Wi-Fi or mobile data, with support for group messages and voice messages, and encrypted metadata. It is unusual: most feature phones dump you back onto plain SMS, which is not private.

Its usefulness depends entirely on who you talk to. If nobody in your circle uses it, you are on SMS. Do not buy the phone for Pigeon alone.

The specific failure modes

Four things break for real people on this phone, and none of them are fixable with a software update. Know all four before you order.

1. No WhatsApp, and no way to add it

The MP02 has no app store, so WhatsApp, Signal's own app, iMessage, and Telegram are all out. Your only channels are calls, SMS and MMS, and Pigeon. If your family group chat lives on WhatsApp, you will be the person who misses everything.

There is no workaround on the phone itself. The realistic fix is a tablet or laptop running your messenger at home. That is a second device, which undercuts the point for some buyers.

2. No camera, which means no QR codes

Punkt ships the MP02 with no camera and no torch. Digital Camera World listed both as cons, and specifically noted that the missing camera blocks QR code scanning. Restaurant menus, parking meters, event tickets, and Wi-Fi joins increasingly assume a camera.

This is the failure mode people underestimate most. You cannot photograph a whiteboard, a receipt, or a parking bay number. Carry a small notebook or accept the friction.

3. Carrier activation and VoLTE

The MP02 supports 4G LTE on FDD bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 17, 19, and 20, plus 3G and 2G. Band 12 and band 17 are the ones that matter most for US coverage. Check your carrier's list before you buy, not after.

The bigger issue is voice. Carriers worldwide have switched off 3G, so calls now depend on VoLTE working with your specific network. Punkt's own release notes show this being patched carrier by carrier: a June 2025 build kept voice calls alive for Sunrise customers in Switzerland as 3G shut down, and a later build fixed VoLTE behavior in the UK, Norway, and Italy.

Read that pattern honestly. It shows Punkt still supporting a 2018 phone, which is good. It also shows that VoLTE on a niche handset is not guaranteed on your network today.

4. Update cadence is slow

Punkt lists the operating system as Apostrophy, version APHY 1.3. The public release notes show APHY v1.3 dated 29 August 2023, then v1.3.1 builds in 2025. That is maintenance, not development.

For a feature phone that is defensible. Nothing on it faces the open web except Pigeon and the hotspot. Just do not expect new features to arrive.

24-month total cost

The MP02 costs more up front than a basic Android and less over time than most minimalist rivals, because Punkt charges no subscription. Punkt sells the hardware and stops there. There is no mandatory monthly fee tied to the device.

Here is the honest arithmetic on the hardware alone, using the prices each vendor lists. Your carrier plan sits on top and is yours to choose.

Two conclusions fall out of that table. The MP02 is by a wide margin the cheaper device up front - CHF 299.00 against the Light Phone III's $899. And because Punkt sells no plan, your monthly bill is whatever a cheap voice-and-text MVNO charges you.

Punkt MP02 vs Light Phone III

These two phones target the same buyer and disagree about how much to take away. The MP02 removes more and costs less. The Light Phone III keeps a touchscreen, a camera, and directions, and charges $899 for the privilege.

One note on where Punkt is heading. The company also sells full Android smartphones, and buyers confuse the lines constantly. The MC02 is a 5G Android privacy smartphone with a 6.67-inch IPS screen, listed by Punkt at CHF 499.00 (verified 21 August 2026), and Punkt has since shown an MC03. Those are privacy phones with browsers, cameras, and apps, not screen-time tools, and their pricing has shifted since launch.

Don't buy the Punkt MP02 if...

Five honest disqualifiers, drawn from the failure modes above. Any one of them should stop the order.

• Your group chats live on WhatsApp. There is no app store and no workaround on the device.
• You drive somewhere new regularly. There are no maps and no navigation of any kind.
• You need an authenticator app. Move those codes to a hardware key or another device first.
• Your carrier's VoLTE support is uncertain. Confirm bands and VoLTE with the carrier before you buy, because 3G fallback is gone.
• You want to spend as little as possible. A used basic Android costs a fraction and blocks almost as much if you are disciplined.

There is one more, and it is the honest one. If you have never tried removing the apps from your current phone, do that first. It is free, and it tells you whether restriction is the thing you actually need.

Final word on the Punkt MP02

The Punkt MP02 is worth its price for people who need the choice removed rather than managed. It is beautifully made, it lasts days on a charge, it calls clearly, and it cannot be talked into showing you a feed. Those are real, verifiable strengths.

The costs are equally real. No camera means no QR codes. No app store means no WhatsApp. VoLTE support depends on your carrier, and the software moves slowly.

If you need one device to do everything, this is the wrong purchase, and no amount of good design will fix that.
