Brave vs Firefox Compared for People Who Want Less AI
Firefox blocks its AI features from one switch, and Brave makes you find three.
Short Answer
Firefox is the better pick of the two if you want less artificial intelligence (AI) in your browser. We write the browser and search guides on this site, and these are the two settings panels we go back to most. Firefox also runs the last browser engine that belongs to neither Google nor Apple. Brave wins if you want third-party ads and trackers blocked from first launch with nothing to install, and a Chromium fork does not trouble you.
Neither one is AI free when you install it. Brave ships Leo, its own assistant, in the sidebar and in the address bar. Firefox ships website translation, image descriptions for Portable Document Format (PDF) files, AI tab groups, link previews, and a sidebar chatbot that passes your prompt to an outside company.

Brave vs Firefox on AI Features and How to Turn Them Off
Firefox gives you one switch that blocks its AI features, while Brave splits the same job across a Leo settings page and a separate toolbar control. That difference decides how long the cleanup takes. On Firefox it is about a minute. On Brave you will visit three places, and missing one of them leaves an AI prompt in front of you every time you type a web address.
Readers most often stop after one toggle. Hiding the sidebar assistant does nothing to the address bar suggestion. It leaves the right-click menu alone as well. In both browsers those sit in a different panel from the one you just used.
Turning off Firefox's AI Features
Mozilla added an AI Controls panel in Firefox 148, announced on its own blog on 2 February 2026. That panel is the fastest route of any option here.
- Open Settings, then choose AI Controls in the left column.
- Turn on "Block AI enhancements". Mozilla says this covers upcoming features as well as current ones, so you do not have to repeat the job after each release.
- Set any feature you still want back to Available or Enabled from its own dropdown. The three states are Available, Enabled, and Blocked. Blocking a feature also deletes any on-device model Firefox downloaded, which frees that disk space.
- Remove the chatbot from the sidebar under Customize sidebar, in the Firefox tools group.
- For a harder block, open about:config, accept the warning, and set browser.ml.chat.enabled to false. This stops the chatbot loading at all rather than hiding its button.
The sidebar chatbot is not Mozilla's own model. It hands your prompt to a company you choose from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, or Mistral, which means the privacy question is theirs and not Firefox's. AI controls reached Firefox on phones on 19 May 2026, covering translations and voice search on Android, and translations and Shake to Summarize on iPhone.
Turning off Brave Leo
Brave has no equivalent master switch, so Leo comes off in three steps rather than one.
- Open Settings, then Leo, or go straight to brave://settings/leo-ai. Brave's help centre page on disabling Leo says Clear Leo data withdraws your consent. Hiding the button does not.
- In the same panel, turn off "Show autocomplete suggestions in the address bar". Leave this on and Leo keeps offering to answer whatever you type into the address bar.
- Right-click the Leo icon and choose Hide, or drop it under Settings, then Appearance, then Customize Toolbar. You can remove it from the sidebar in the same place.
Leo is free to use without an account, and Brave says conversations "are not persisted for model training". Leo Premium costs $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year on Brave's premium pricing page, checked 2 September 2026, and buys higher limits and more models. The free tier runs models from Mistral, Anthropic, and Meta.
Brave Search carries AI too, in the "Answer with AI" button and a chat mode called Ask Brave. Both need a click, so neither runs unless you ask. Brave vs Firefox on Engine Independence
Brave runs on Chromium and Firefox runs on Gecko. That is the one difference between them you cannot change with a setting. Brave's own about page calls the browser "a Chromium fork that removes privacy-harmful features and disables or proxies connections to Google when possible". The same page says the iPhone version is built on Apple's WebKit.
Mozilla calls Gecko "the only independent browser engine left" in its 8 September 2025 post on the Google search ruling. That claim holds up: every other mainstream browser is a Chromium or WebKit build underneath.
In practice that difference shows up in extensions. When Google changes what Chromium extensions are allowed to do, every Chromium fork inherits the change and patches around it afterwards. Brave has done that work, and done it well. It is still downstream work on someone else's schedule. Gecko sits outside that chain, so a decision made at Google does not reach Firefox's extension rules without Mozilla agreeing to it.

What Each Browser Blocks out of the Box
Brave blocks third-party ads and trackers on a fresh install, and Firefox does not block ads at all. That is the plainest daily difference between them.
Brave Shields is on for every site with no setup, in a default called Standard mode. Shields blocks third-party ads, trackers, and cross-site cookies. It also randomises the values used for browser fingerprinting, so a site cannot recognise your machine on its next visit, and it warns you before a phishing page loads. Aggressive mode blocks more and breaks more sites, and you can drop Shields per site from the address bar icon when a page stops working.
Firefox turns on Enhanced Tracking Protection by default, which includes Total Cookie Protection, fingerprint blocking, and what Mozilla's protection page calls blocking of "2000+ ad trackers". Read that wording closely. Firefox stops advertisers following you between sites, and the advert itself still renders, so you install a content blocker yourself.

Where Each Company's Money Comes From
Mozilla is funded mostly by a search deal with Google, and Brave is funded by advertising, subscriptions, and crypto fees. Funding predicts which defaults you get next year better than any privacy scorecard does.
Mozilla's audited consolidated statements for 2023 report $494.9 million in royalties and $64.8 million in subscription and advertising revenue. The same filing states that "approximately 85% and 81% of Mozilla's revenues from customers with contracts were derived from one customer" for 2023 and 2022. You can read the figures in Mozilla's own 2023 audited financial statements. Mozilla does not hide the exposure. Mozilla wrote in its post on the search ruling that an enforced ban would have "made it harder for independent browsers to compete, effectively reducing competition in the browser market".
Brave names four revenue lines itself. They are Brave Ads, the Brave Search application programming interface (API) it licenses to developers, premium subscriptions, and fees on crypto activity in its wallet. Brave Rewards is the part readers ask about. It is opt-in. It pays you Basic Attention Token (BAT) for viewing new tab images and push notifications. Brave states that "for eligible ads, users earn a share of the revenue greater than or equal to Brave's share for the ad". No adverts are injected into web pages.
Mozilla's concentration on one customer is why Firefox keeps testing subscriptions and advertising products it did not need a decade ago. Brave's advertising and crypto model explains its own default install. A fresh copy carries Rewards, a wallet, a news reader, and Leo because those lines pay for the browser. It is also why stripping them out became a product you buy. Brave Origin, announced 4 June 2026, is a $59.99 one-time purchase, and Brave's Origin page says it is free to all Linux users. It ships with Leo AI, News, Rewards, Talk, Tor, the virtual private network (VPN), Wallet, Speedreader, Wayback Machine, and crash and analytics pings all toggled off. Firefox asks you to click one free switch for the same quiet. Brave asks for $59.99, or for a trip through three settings panels.
The Two Controversies Worth Knowing
Brave's worst moment was June 2020, when its address bar added affiliate codes to typed web addresses. Typing Binance's address sent you to a referral link. Brave published its own account on 9 June 2020. It wrote that "the error was adding the affiliate code to the default completion, instead of only to the suggested alternative completions that users must pick manually".
Brave apologised in that post. It set "Show Brave suggested sites in autocomplete suggestions" to off in the stable desktop release 1.9.80, published the same day. It also committed to "never add anything to the default completion for URLs typed into the address bar". We count that as handled. The 2020 lapse is still fair to hold against a browser sold on its address bar.
Mozilla's problem is structural and ongoing rather than a single incident. Firefox survives on payments from Google, the company that also makes Chrome. That limits how hard Mozilla can argue against the search and browser defaults Google sets, because those same defaults pay for Gecko. Extensions, Sync, Mobile, and Memory
Brave runs Chrome extensions and Firefox runs its own add-on catalogue, so the answer here depends on one add-on you cannot live without. Brave's frequently asked questions page confirms full extension support while noting that Brave has disabled Google Accounts and Chrome sync, so your bookmarks do not travel through Google. Firefox add-ons come from Mozilla's own catalogue, and Firefox for Android runs extensions too, which Chromium-based mobile browsers mostly do not.
On memory, we are not going to hand you a number we did not measure. Neither company publishes a like-for-like random access memory (RAM) benchmark against the other. The third-party figures that circulate come from different machines, tab counts, and extension sets. Measure it on your own machine instead. Open the same ten tabs in each browser, then read Firefox's about:processes page and Brave's task manager at Shift and Escape. Whatever that shows is the only figure describing your setup.

Our Pick and Who Should Skip It
We pick Firefox. It blocks its AI features from one panel. It runs the last engine that is neither Chromium nor WebKit. Installing a content blocker on Firefox is a one-time job, and it takes less time than Brave's three-panel Leo cleanup.
Skip that recommendation if you want ad blocking to work the moment you install and you have no interest in engines. Brave is better at that, and better by a wide margin. Install Brave, leave Shields on Standard, then spend five minutes on the Leo steps above. Skip Firefox as well if your job depends on a web application that only certifies against Chromium. Gecko will surface rendering bugs the application's developers never tested for.
Two things would change our answer. Mozilla could ship an AI feature that "Block AI enhancements" does not cover, or retire the panel. Firefox would then lose the reason we prefer it, and we would move to a hardened fork. Brave could give Leo, Rewards, and Wallet one free off switch in the standard build, instead of reserving that layout for the $59.99 Origin purchase. The gap would then narrow to the engine question alone.
