AI Free Apps Ranked on a Four Level AI Exposure Scale

Short Answer

AI free means four different things. The guides we keep here all run into the same definition problem. eSpeak NG, which has no machine learning at all, and Kagi, which has AI features you switch on, get sold under the same two words.

So every category below is scored on one scale. Level 1 means no machine learning anywhere in the product. Level 2 means machine learning is present, but classic, on device and never generative. Level 3 means generative AI ships with a working off switch. Level 4 means generative AI is on by default, and the maker publishes no way to remove it.

Each section names one option we checked against its maker's own documentation, gives that option a level, and links to the full guide for the category.

The Four Levels of AI Free

The scale separates products that never contained machine learning from products that only let you hide it.

Level 4 is the one people mistake for Level 3. Google's own help page for AI Overviews says they are a core part of Search, like knowledge panels, and cannot be switched off as a feature. That page points to the Web filter as the way to see plain text links instead. A workaround is not a setting.

What we see readers get wrong most often is treating Level 3 as settled. A toggle is a promise the maker can withdraw in the next release. A configuration file that locks the setting is a stronger guarantee than a checkbox in a preferences pane. Compare the mechanism rather than the marketing line.

Browsers

LibreWolf arrives with the AI machinery already switched off, rather than waiting for you to find it. Its published configuration file sets browser.ml.enable to false and removes the AI chat entry from the context menu. It also hides the AI pane in preferences and locks the default AI control state to blocked. So no chatbot sidebar appears, and nothing needs disabling again after an update.

Firefox sits at Level 3. Since version 133 it has offered a chatbot sidebar you pick a provider for. Mozilla's support page explains that setting browser.ml.chat.enabled to false in about:config removes the feature. That page also spells out the cost of leaving it on. Your text selection, your prompt and the page title all go to whichever chatbot provider you picked.

Search Engines

The unusual case in this category is noai.duckduckgo.com, a Level 1 search surface run by a company whose main site is not. DuckDuckGo's help page for it says searching there works the same as the standard site. The difference is that all AI features are turned off and AI generated images are filtered out of results by default. You get the same index without policing six settings.

Kagi is the clearest Level 3 example we found, because it documents the mechanism. Its AI settings documentation states that AI features are on demand. Turning off AI Feature Access hides the interface elements and disables their triggers inside search. Mojeek is worth a look for a different reason. It has crawled and built its own index from scratch since 2011, so its results are not resold from someone else's.

Note Taking Apps

Notesnook is Level 1, and it states the position in terms most makers avoid. It will not add anything that reads your notes, and it tells you to pick a different app if AI is what you want. Notes are encrypted on your device before they sync, so there is no server-side copy for a later feature to read.

Obsidian reaches the same place by another route. It stores everything as plain text Markdown files on your disk, which moves the AI question from the app to whichever community plugins you install. Photo and Image Editing

GIMP and darktable are both Level 1, and between them they cover retouching and raw development. GIMP describes itself there as a program for photo retouching, image composition and image authoring, and names nothing generative. darktable states that all editing is fully non-destructive and operates on cached image buffers. Your original raw file is never rewritten, so you can undo a decision you made months ago. The gap is real. Neither offers one-click generative background removal or upscaling, because those are the two jobs the market solved with generative models. Video Editing

Kdenlive is the video editor we checked, and it scores Level 2 rather than Level 1 for one reason. Cutting, colour and compositing involve no machine learning at all. Subtitles do. The speech to text documentation shows you choosing between the VOSK and Whisper engines, downloading a language model, and running the transcription on your own machine. That is a trained model, it is not generative, and your footage never leaves the computer. If you want strict Level 1, skip the plugin and type the subtitles yourself.

Code Editors

VSCodium is the Level 1 way to keep using the most popular editor in the world without the assistant Microsoft now builds into it. Visual Studio Code currently describes itself on its own homepage as the open source AI code editor. Copilot Chat has moved into the product rather than sitting beside it as an optional extension. VSCodium compiles the same source without Microsoft's product customisations, and its project page states that telemetry is disabled. You keep the editor and your extensions, and lose the shipped chat panel.

Video Calls

Jitsi Meet needs no account to start a call. That matters, because on most conferencing products the AI features are attached to the account rather than to the call. Jitsi has shipped speech to text since a 2017 prototype, and that transcription puts a default deployment at Level 3 rather than Level 2. Its post on the rebuilt transcription architecture says the audio goes to a speech to text provider such as Deepgram or OpenAI. Jitsi reaches Level 2 only where the operator points the deployment at a model they host themselves, which keeps the audio inside their own infrastructure. Leave transcription off in the call, or run a deployment against a self-hosted model.

Zoom is Level 3 with a condition attached. Zoom's own admin documentation says account owners and admins enable or disable AI features for everyone or for specific groups. Individual users can change only some of them, and only where an admin has not locked the setting. On a work account, the answer belongs to your administrator rather than to you.

Email

Thunderbird is the Level 1 email client, and it is unusually direct about why. Its homepage says it does not collect personal data, sell ads in your inbox, or secretly train AI with your private conversations. It is a desktop client, so your mail sits on your own machine in a format you can move. That makes the promise checkable. It also handles several accounts in one inbox, so leaving a webmail assistant behind does not mean juggling four browser tabs.

Word Processors

LibreOffice leads its own homepage with the words "Free and private office suite, no forced AI". A maker scoring itself on the same question you are asking is rare. Writer opens and saves the Microsoft Word formats your colleagues send, so switching does not cost you a shared document. There is no assistant in the sidebar to dismiss, and none returns after an update.

Phones

The Punkt MP02 is Level 1 hardware, listed at CHF 299.00 and out of stock on Punkt's own store when we checked on 2 September 2026. It handles calls, texts and encrypted messaging, and it has no app store. So no assistant can arrive later through an update to an app you installed. That restriction is the product. Text to Speech

eSpeak NG is the cleanest Level 1 example we found, because its method predates the argument entirely. It uses formant synthesis, generating speech from acoustic rules rather than from recorded human voices or a trained model. Its own documentation is candid about the trade. The speech is clear and works at high speed, and it is not as natural or smooth as synthesisers built on human recordings. It also fits in a few megabytes and runs offline on almost anything. Paraphrasing and Writing Help

No rewriting tool we checked reaches Level 1 and keeps rewriting your sentences for you, because rewriting a sentence is generation. The Level 1 answer for this category is a thesaurus and your own hands. The Merriam-Webster Thesaurus gives you the word, and you decide where it goes. That sounds like a dodge until you price the alternative, which is sending the paragraph you are working on to a third party server. Image Boards and Inspiration

Cara scores Level 1 on the measure that matters for an image board, which is what it hosts. Its AI policy says it will not host AI generated portfolios until the data and ethics questions around training sets are settled by regulation. Uploads carry NoAI tags by default, which signal scrapers away. Cara also says it does not train on user data or permit third parties to do so. Turning AI Off in Software You Already Use

Most readers do not need new software. They need the switch buried in the software already installed. Every product below sits at Level 3 or Level 4, so the steps change with each release, and each guide is maintained against the current version.

• Apple Intelligence on iPhone and Mac
• Gemini on Android
• Meta AI in WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook
• Galaxy AI on Samsung phones

Who This Is Not For

Anyone whose paid work depends on a generative feature should stay where they are and manage the exposure instead. A video editor whose clients expect auto transcription and masked object tracking will lose hours moving to Kdenlive. The better move there is to keep the current suite and switch the generative features off per project.

The same applies if your employer runs a managed Microsoft or Google account. There the assistant is an administrator's decision rather than yours, so start with the Copilot guide and take the rest to your IT team. And if you want a rewriting tool that produces finished sentences, none of the categories above will help, because that job has no Level 1 answer.

What Would Change Our Answer

Any Level 1 recommendation here moves down the scale the day its maker ships a generative feature. That has already happened to products we once listed. Three changes would rewrite whole sections.

• LibreWolf dropping the locked AI control default from its configuration file
• Notesnook adding any feature that reads note content
• LibreOffice dropping the no forced AI line from its own homepage

We watch the documentation rather than the release notes, because a feature usually appears in the settings reference before anyone announces it. Pick the one category of ai free apps you touch every day, open its guide from the list above, and check the level before you install anything.
