Can You Turn Off Meta AI on Facebook Permanently?

No. Facebook and Messenger help pages document no setting that turns Meta AI off permanently. Every guide we write starts from a platform's own help pages, so each step below quotes the menu names Meta publishes.

According to Facebook's Ask Meta AI documentation, Meta AI sits in the Facebook search area, and you may see a summary or response from Meta AI while searching. Meta notes that Meta AI "isn't yet available for everyone." Where it is available, the help pages document no way to remove it from search or from the Ask Meta AI prompts below posts.

What you can do is limit Meta AI surface by surface. You can mute the Meta AI chat and turn off Allow message sharing in a Messenger chat. Group admins can disable a group's AI, and /reset-ai deletes Meta's copy of your chat. You can also stop business-AI replies and turn off Page Inbox automations.

How to Limit Meta AI on Facebook and Messenger

Meta documents controls for Messenger chats, Facebook groups and business chats.

To stop people in a Messenger chat from using Meta AI features on that chat's messages, change the chat's message permissions. As outlined in Facebook's message sharing permissions guide, turning it off blocks features such as summarizing with Meta AI or asking Meta AI to edit someone else's photo:

  1. Open a chat inside the Messenger mobile app.
  2. Tap Information.
  3. Below Privacy & support, tap Message permissions.
  4. Tap the toggle next to Allow message sharing to turn off message sharing.

In a direct chat with one other person, either participant can adjust this toggle. In a group chat, only administrators can modify the permission. The setting is being gradually introduced and remains unavailable for some formats, such as Marketplace chats. The help page warns that people can still share chat messages with Meta, for example by reporting them to Meta or forwarding them to Meta AI.

To mute an existing Meta AI chat, follow Facebook's Messenger AI chat guide:

  1. Open the Messenger mobile app and find your Meta AI chat in your Chats list.
  2. Tap the AI's name at the top of your chat.
  3. Select Mute notifications for this chat. The help page notes that AIs you chat with may send follow-up messages.

If you admin a Facebook group that is eligible for a group AI, the group AI is on by default. Group AI "currently isn't available for everyone, in all regions, or in all groups." According to Facebook's group AI documentation, group admins can turn off the group AI with these steps:

  1. From your group, tap Manage.
  2. Scroll down and tap Your group's AI below Tool shortcuts, tapping See all tools first if the shortcut is hidden.
  3. Tap the options button and select Disable.
  4. Tap Disable to confirm your choice.

When communicating with commercial entities, Facebook's business chat documentation explains that some Pages use AI to reply in Messenger chats. Those messages are labeled "Facebook created this chat". To stop automated replies inside a thread, type chat with a representative or stop messages from AI directly into the conversation. Meta notes you could still receive AI-generated messages from the same business or other businesses in the future.

To clear your conversational data, use the text commands documented in Meta's AI chat information guide:

  1. Open your chat with Meta AI.
  2. Send the command /reset-ai to delete the AI's copy of your messages and the previous context of the conversation.
  3. Send /reset-all-ais to reset all the AIs in that app, including ones in group chats you're in.
  4. Type /ai-options and tap Submit to see the list of available commands.
  5. Clear the chat from your view using the delete chat steps in the app. After a reset you still see your copy of the chat until you delete it.

Turning Off AI Features on a Facebook Page You Manage

Page admins can edit and turn off Inbox automations at any time from the Page's Inbox.

As detailed in Facebook's business Inbox help guide, you turn off Inbox automations by going to your Inbox:

  1. Navigate to your business Page and access your Inbox.
  2. Edit or turn off your Inbox automations, such as away messages or instant replies. Meta's help page gives no deeper menu path.

Meta's June 3, 2026 announcement says more than one million businesses already use a Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger. Meta is also expanding Business Agent to Instagram. Turning on a Meta Business Agent automatically pauses standard Inbox automations. When we reviewed Meta's help pages, none gave steps for pausing Meta Business Agent on a Facebook Page. If you let Meta AI read your business assets in the Meta AI app or at meta.ai, Meta's AI business support page says you can stop Meta AI reading them. Ask Meta AI to revoke permission to read data from those business assets.

Why Meta AI Is on Your Facebook

Meta AI is on Facebook because Meta has built it into Facebook search, the Feed and Messenger. Meta's help pages describe where it appears and give no way to remove it.

Meta AI appears in these places on Facebook:

Meta AI Training and Your Facebook Data

Meta trains its generative AI on public content from its apps. Your options to object depend on where you live. Training inputs include public posts, photos, captions and your interactions with Meta AI.

The scope of corporate model training is outlined in the Meta Privacy Policy and Meta's Generative AI privacy center:

In the European Union, Meta's news release from April 14, 2025, updated March 27, 2026 says notifications link to a form where people can object at any time. Meta trains there on public posts and comments shared by adults. UK adults get in-app notifications about how to access an objection form, per Meta's September 13, 2024 announcement.

Outside the EU and UK, the picture is unclear. A Messenger help page says you "can submit an objection" and links a Facebook objection form with no regional qualifier. That form requires an active Facebook account, and its eligibility rules for people outside the EU and UK are not visible. Anyone can also use Meta's third-party AI information form about personal information from third parties. Meta reviews those requests under local laws and doesn't fulfill them automatically. You can read our broader instructions on how to turn off Meta AI across Meta's apps.

What You Cannot Turn Off

Several Meta AI features on Facebook and Messenger have no documented off switch.

Meta's help pages document no way to remove or hide these:

For other apps, see our guide to Facebook alternatives. For settings on other networks, see how to turn off AI on social media.

Who This Configuration Does Not Serve

Turning these features off does not suit you if you rely on Meta AI summaries or on automated replies to customers.

Small business owners who use Messenger to handle late-night client questions will lose coverage by shutting down automated Page replies. Group administrators who rely on automated tools to answer repetitive newcomer questions will have to handle community moderation manually. In individual chats, disabling message sharing prevents friends from using collaborative photo editing or quick conversation summaries.

What Would Change Our Answer

Our assessment that Meta AI cannot be turned off permanently would change if Meta released a unified account preference that hides Meta AI across Facebook and Messenger.

We would also update our guidance if Meta gave users worldwide the same formal right to object to model training that Meta's newsroom posts describe for EU and UK adults. Until Meta implements those account controls, the message sharing toggle, the group AI switch, muting and /reset-ai remain the main ways to limit Meta AI.

Check the message permissions toggle inside your most important Messenger threads so no one in those chats can use AI features that share the chat's messages with Meta AI.
