How to Turn Off or Opt Out of Meta AI (2026)

The short answer

Meta does not offer one setting that fully removes Meta AI from Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. What you can do instead is mute or block it app by app: mute Meta AI's suggestions in Instagram and Facebook, and on WhatsApp, turn on Advanced Chat Privacy in a specific chat to stop the @Meta AI button from working there.

If you are in the EU or UK, Meta also offers a formal way to object to some of your data being used for Meta AI, covered further down.

Why there is no single "turn off Meta AI" switch

Meta AI is built directly into the search bar, chat composer, and feed of each app, rather than living as a separate app you can uninstall. Because it is stitched into features people already use every day — search, direct messages, image editing — Meta has not shipped an account-wide off switch the way some other companies have for their assistants. What exists instead is a set of per-app, and sometimes per-chat, controls that reduce how often you see it or stop it from working in one specific place.

WhatsApp: block Meta AI from a specific chat

You cannot remove the Meta AI button from WhatsApp entirely — it is part of the app. You can, however, stop it from working inside an individual chat using Advanced Chat Privacy:

1. Open the chat you want to protect and tap the contact or group name at the top.
2. Scroll down and tap Advanced Chat Privacy.
3. Toggle the setting on.

Once it is on, typing @Meta AI in that chat shows a message confirming Meta AI is not available there. This has to be repeated per chat — there is no single toggle that blocks Meta AI across every conversation at once.

Instagram: mute Meta AI

On Instagram, Meta AI shows up in search results and as a suggested contact in your DMs. You cannot delete it as a contact, but you can mute it so it stops sending you suggestions and prompts.

Open your conversation with Meta AI, tap the info icon, and choose Mute. As on Facebook, this quiets Meta AI's proactive suggestions rather than removing the feature from the app.

Facebook and Messenger: mute Meta AI

Facebook and Messenger work the same way as Instagram: there is no official way to disable Meta AI outright, but you can mute it.

1. Open the search bar in Messenger and tap the Meta AI icon (the blue arrow/circle).
2. Tap the "i" info icon.
3. Select Mute, then choose "Until I change it" so it stays muted.

Muting stops Meta AI from proactively messaging you or surfacing suggestions in that thread, but the feature itself remains part of the app.

EU and UK: the Meta AI data objection form

Users in the European Union and United Kingdom have an additional option under regional privacy law: a formal objection to some of your data being used to train Meta AI. This does not remove Meta AI from your apps, but it does let you push back on how your information feeds it.

1. Open the Facebook app or website, or Instagram.
2. Go to Settings and Privacy, then Privacy Center.
3. Select Privacy Topics, scroll down, and choose the AI at Meta section.
4. Follow the objection form's instructions.

This right exists because of EU and UK data protection rules and is not currently offered the same way to users elsewhere.

Outside the EU and UK: can you opt out of Meta AI training?

Outside the European Union and the United Kingdom, we found no Meta page offering a form to opt your posts out of generative artificial intelligence (AI) training. According to the Meta Generative AI Privacy Policy, Meta trains its models on information available on the internet and from third parties. It also trains on content shared across Meta products, including posts, photos, captions, and interactions with AI features.

If you live outside the EU and UK, you have a limited set of levers to restrict what Meta collects:

1. Keep your accounts and posts non-public. Meta states that it trains on public content such as posts and comments. Meta says it does not train models on private messages with friends and family unless someone in the chat shares that conversation with an AI feature. In Messenger, you can stop people in a chat from sharing its messages with Meta AI, one chat at a time. Tap Information, then under Privacy & support tap Message permissions and turn off Allow message sharing, as detailed in Meta's Messenger privacy guide.
2. Delete your Meta AI conversation copies. Conversations with Meta AI are not deleted from Meta when you clear a chat thread on WhatsApp. Per Meta's AI chat deletion guide, send the command /reset-ai inside any chat on Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp. The command deletes Meta's copy of those messages and the prior conversation context. You can send /reset-all-ais to clear every assistant on that app.
3. Clear stored conversations in the standalone app. If you use the standalone Meta AI mobile application, follow the path in Meta's data management instructions. Tap Menu > Settings > Data & privacy > Manage your information > Delete all chats and media > Delete all. This action clears stored prompts, media, and history, though Meta notes public vibes remain intact.
4. Limit off-platform advertising data. As Meta announced on October 1, 2025, interactions with Meta AI feed targeted advertising and content recommendations across most regions. For ads based on Meta AI chats, Meta names Ads Preferences and other feed controls. A June 9, 2026 Meta update said activity from other businesses will be used to personalize AI responses. The control that remains is the setting labeled Activity from other businesses.
5. Submit the third-party data request form. Meta offers a global form for personal information obtained from outside sources at Meta's third-party AI data request page. This form applies only to data gathered from third parties or the public web, rather than your direct Facebook or Instagram posts. Meta reviews each submission under local laws and does not fulfill requests automatically.

A generic account objection form link appears on a Messenger help page without a regional label. When visited without an active session, the page states only that an active Facebook account is required. Its rules for users outside the EU and UK are not visible, so it is unclear whether Meta honors their requests. To restrict what Meta gathers today, adjust your account audience to private and run the chat deletion commands inside your active threads.

Be honest with yourself about what these settings actually do: none of them remove Meta AI from your account. WhatsApp's Advanced Chat Privacy blocks it per chat, and muting on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger quiets its suggestions without disabling the underlying feature. If full removal matters to you, the EU/UK objection form is the closest thing Meta offers to opting out, and it is not available everywhere.

Can I delete Meta AI as a contact on WhatsApp or Instagram?

No. Meta AI cannot be removed as a contact on either app. You can mute it on Instagram, and block it from responding inside a specific WhatsApp chat with Advanced Chat Privacy.

Does muting Meta AI delete my past conversations with it?

No. Muting or blocking stops future suggestions or responses; it does not delete previous chats. Deleting a chat removes it from your view, but does not undo the fact that anything you sent was already processed by Meta AI at the time.

Is there any way to fully turn off Meta AI on WhatsApp?
