How to Remove Meta AI From WhatsApp Chats
Step-by-step paths from WhatsApp's own help pages for Android and iPhone.
WhatsApp documents no way to remove the Meta AI button, but Restricted chat blocks Meta AI features in any chat you turn it on for. In the guides we publish here, we pair that setting with the /reset-ai command, which deletes Meta AI's copy of a chat.
Can You Remove Meta AI From WhatsApp?
WhatsApp documents no setting, switch, or menu path to remove, hide, or uninstall the Meta AI button, icon, or search bar prompt. WhatsApp describes Meta AI as an optional service that can answer questions, teach you something, or help come up with ideas. Even so, Meta AI entry points sit on the Chats tab and in the search bar.
Some users may see Meta AI on the Chats tab as a pink and purple oval circle or a blue and purple circle. WhatsApp notes that Meta AI and some related experiences are available in limited countries and might not appear for every user, even within the same region. Secondary reporting from the European tech publication heise online reported that Meta AI rolled out to European Union (EU) versions of Meta apps at the end of March 2025. Meta AI does not start a conversation on its own. Only you or a group participant can start one, by opening a chat or sending a message to Meta AI.
How to Block Meta AI in a Chat With Restricted Chat
To prevent participants from using Meta AI features inside a specific conversation, you must turn on Restricted chat within that chat's profile settings. Restricted chat stops everyone in that chat from using Meta AI features or exporting the chat.
According to WhatsApp's Restricted chat documentation, Restricted chat replaces the older feature originally introduced as Advanced Chat Privacy in April 2025. If you previously turned on Advanced Chat Privacy, that conversation will not update to Restricted chat automatically; you must tap Advanced chat privacy, then tap Upgrade > Continue. Enabling Restricted chat enforces four specific restrictions on all participants in the thread:
- Participants cannot use Meta AI features in this chat.
- Participants cannot use linked devices for this chat, which WhatsApp says helps prevent the use of unofficial clients or AI agents.
- Participants cannot export the chat transcript.
- Participants cannot save media from this chat to their device gallery automatically.
Follow these exact steps to enable Restricted chat on Android devices:
- Tap the chat you want to edit.
- Tap the icon shown in WhatsApp's help article, then tap View contact > Restricted chat.
- Turn on Restricted chat.
On an iPhone, follow these official steps as outlined in WhatsApp's iOS Restricted chat guide:
- Tap the chat you want to edit.
- Tap the name.
- Tap Restricted chat and enable the setting.
In group conversations on iPhone, tap the name of the group, tap Restricted chat, and switch it on. In individual chats, either participant can turn the setting on or off. In group chats, only group admins can enable or update Restricted chat, and the setting applies to every member. Restricted chat has one documented gap. People who are not on the latest version of WhatsApp may still be able to use unofficial clients or AI agents in the chat. WhatsApp will not tell you who is on an older version, so ask everyone in a sensitive chat to update WhatsApp.
Deleting the Meta AI Chat and Resetting What It Keeps
Deleting a chat with Meta AI is permanent, because WhatsApp says a deleted Meta AI chat can't be restored. Deleting Meta AI's copy of your messages is a separate step that takes a typed command in the message field.
As outlined in WhatsApp's chat management guide, you must run text commands to delete Meta AI's copy of your messages and shared information. Follow these steps to wipe Meta AI's copy, then delete the chat:
- Open the chat with Meta AI from your Chats list.
- To wipe Meta AI's copy of messages from this single conversation, type /reset-ai in the message field and send it.
- To wipe Meta AI's copy across all individual and group chats where you chatted with Meta AI, type /reset-all-ais in the message field and send it.
- On Android, tap the icon shown in WhatsApp's help article, tap and hold the chat you want to delete, and tap Delete chat > Delete.
These reset commands are not supported in Incognito chats with Meta AI because messages in Incognito chats aren't saved or stored. Starting a new interaction in the future requires manually tapping the Chats tab icon and accepting the terms if prompted, as documented in WhatsApp's chat initiation guide.
Meta AI in Group Chats
In a group chat, Meta AI takes part only when a member mentions @Meta AI or shares a message with Meta AI.
As documented in WhatsApp's AI interaction guide, only you or a group participant can initiate an interaction by opening a chat or sending a prompt to the AI. If a member mentions @Meta AI in a group, Meta receives that prompt. To stop members using Meta AI features in the group, a group admin can turn on Restricted chat. When enabled, the setting applies to every member of the group and blocks Meta AI features in that chat.
Can Meta AI Read Your WhatsApp Messages?
Meta can read only the WhatsApp messages that mention @Meta AI or that people choose to share with Meta AI. End-to-end encryption protects your other personal messages and calls.
WhatsApp's documentation affirms that personal calls and messages remain encrypted from sender to recipient. No one outside of the chat, including WhatsApp and Meta, can read, listen to, or share that content. You do not need Restricted chat to keep Meta AI out of your other messages. WhatsApp says Meta AI can only access the messages people choose to send it, whether Restricted chat is on or off.
However, any text sent directly to Meta AI loses this confidentiality. As stated in WhatsApp's help resources, Meta receives your prompts, shared messages, and feedback to generate responses. Meta may also use your prompts, shared messages, and feedback to improve Meta's AI models. WhatsApp explicitly warns users not to send messages containing information they do not want Meta to know.
Message Summaries and Private Processing
WhatsApp provides generative text tools such as message summaries and writing help, but these capabilities operate through an isolated infrastructure called Private Processing and remain turned off by default.
According to WhatsApp's Private Processing documentation, the system runs inside a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). Meta built this architecture so the server environment does not retain access to or store your messages or generated responses after fulfilling the request. Message summaries are private to you, per the message summaries support guide. A summary disappears when you scroll away or exit the chat. The June 2025 WhatsApp announcement adds that no one else in the chat can see that you summarized unread messages. The summary feature currently supports only English, Indonesian, Portuguese, and Spanish.
To check or change the setting, use the path in WhatsApp's Private Processing settings guide:
- Go to WhatsApp Settings.
- Tap Chats > Private Processing.
- Turn Private Processing features off.
Turning off Private Processing features removes the prompt to summarize messages and disables writing help in your chats. If you want to prevent other members from using Private Processing tools to summarize content in a group, a group admin must enable Restricted chat for that conversation.
Meta AI in the Search Bar
Meta AI is built into the WhatsApp search bar, which shows questions you can ask Meta AI alongside results from your chats. WhatsApp documents no setting to remove Meta AI from search.
According to WhatsApp's search bar guide, content from your personal chats stays on your device when you search. WhatsApp notes that Meta does not associate what you type into the search bar with your personal identity unless you choose to send that query as a prompt to Meta AI. You can keep using the search bar to find contacts and chats without sending anything to Meta AI, as long as you tap your chat results and not the suggested Meta AI questions.
Cross-Account Data Sharing and Objection Options
WhatsApp's documentation notes that in some countries, Meta AI may pull details from other profiles linked within your Accounts Center, including Facebook and Instagram accounts. This information can include your age, location, profiles and interests, and WhatsApp says it may also be used to improve AI at Meta. Meta published an EU AI training update on April 14, 2025. Meta said it would train its AI models on public content from adults in the EU and on people's interactions with Meta AI, such as questions and queries. Meta stated it does not train models on private messages shared with friends and family unless someone in the chat chooses to share those messages with Meta AI. Meta said its notifications to EU users include a link to a form for objecting to this use of their data at any time. Meta's update gives no WhatsApp-specific objection path.
Why Other Chatbots Left WhatsApp
Rival AI assistants left WhatsApp because Meta banned them from WhatsApp. Meta AI itself was not removed.
In an official address on June 8, 2026, the European Commission noted that Meta announced in October 2025 that it would ban all competing AI assistants from WhatsApp starting January 15, 2026. The ban covered rival assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, and only Meta AI remained accessible on WhatsApp. The European Commission adopted interim measures requiring Meta to restore access for rival AI assistants until its competition investigation concludes or until June 2029 at the latest. This followed an antitrust investigation opened by the European Commission on December 4, 2025 into Meta's policy prohibiting third-party AI providers from using WhatsApp business tools. The Italian competition authority, AGCM, had also opened proceedings in July 2025 and ordered Meta on December 24, 2025 to suspend the disputed business terms to preserve competitor access.
Separate from policy changes, users in Europe experienced a temporary disappearance of Meta AI in April 2025. As reported by heise online, Meta AI disappeared from EU versions of WhatsApp and other Meta apps. Meta called it "merely a technical problem" and said it was working on fixing it as quickly as possible.
Who This Configuration Does Not Serve
Restricted chat does not suit people who want message summaries, because in a group it stops other members from using Private Processing features such as summaries.
Turning off Private Processing also removes message summaries for you. People who use Meta AI's writing help in a chat also lose it once that chat is under Restricted chat.
What Would Change Our Configuration Guidance
Our recommendation to lock down individual chats and reset Meta AI's copy of your messages would change if Meta introduced an account-wide setting to disable the Meta AI button entirely. WhatsApp's help pages document no way to remove the Meta AI button from the Chats tab, whether or not you use Meta AI.
If WhatsApp provided a universal toggle under Settings to hide the Meta AI button and remove Meta AI questions from the search bar, manual per-chat configuration would become unnecessary. For now, turn on Restricted chat in sensitive chats. Send /reset-ai to delete Meta AI's copy of a chat.
