How to Turn Off AI on Social Media, Platform by Platform
Which social apps let you hide their AI assistant or opt out of AI training, with the documented setting path for each platform.
You cannot turn off artificial intelligence across social media with a single universal switch. Every guide we write starts from the company's own help page, so each setting path we quote comes from the platform that runs it.
Can You Turn Off AI on Social Media? Platform by Platform
Social media platforms do not provide a master off switch for artificial intelligence. Instead, services divide their controls between model training opt-outs, visibility adjustments, and opt-in tools that run only when you tap them.

LinkedIn: Opting Out of AI Training
LinkedIn uses member data by default to train its generative models, but gives users a dedicated setting to stop future training. LinkedIn's help documentation confirms the Data for Generative AI Improvement member setting is turned on by default. Opting out stops LinkedIn from using your content for future model runs, but it does not affect training that has already taken place.
To reach this control through your account settings, follow these steps:
- Click the Me icon at the top of your homepage.
- Select Settings & Privacy from the dropdown menu.
- Select Data privacy to manage your personal settings.
LinkedIn's settings help page stops at Data privacy and does not spell out the last click. The help article on the setting links straight to Data for Generative AI Improvement. LinkedIn documents that this control applies strictly to models that generate content, such as suggested posts or messages. The setting does not apply to models used for personalization, security, or anti-abuse operations. If you submit direct feedback, such as a thumbs up or text critique, LinkedIn may still train content models on that submission.
LinkedIn's AI training policy details what data LinkedIn uses. Training sources include public posts, articles, poll responses, comments, profile information, and job data. LinkedIn states it does not use private messages, login credentials, payment details, or individual salary submissions. Members under 18 are excluded from content-generating model training even if the setting displays as enabled. Since November 3, 2025, LinkedIn expanded generative AI training to the EU, EEA, Switzerland, Canada, and Hong Kong under legitimate interest legal bases. If you want to stop non-generative model training used for personalization and security, you must submit a separate Data Processing Objection Form.
Opting out of data training does not remove generative features from your interface. LinkedIn documents that its post-writing tool is currently unavailable. LinkedIn's FAQ still names other generative features, including Writing Suggestions, Profile Writing Suggestions and Suggested Posts.
X: Stopping Grok From Training on Your Posts
X allows users to disconnect their public posts and chatbot interactions from xAI model training. X says it may share public posts, engagement and repost metadata, public Spaces, and public profile details with xAI to train and fine-tune Grok. X's official Grok help page outlines the data sharing settings that control this data exchange.
To turn off Grok training on X, complete this sequence in your account settings:
- Open your X account settings and select Privacy & Safety.
- Scroll down and select Data sharing and personalization.
- Select Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Find the Data Sharing section.
- Deselect the option to Allow your public data as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok and xAI to be used for training and fine-tuning.
Turning off data sharing does not disable Grok on your account. The opt-out does not prevent deployed systems from learning through normal use when you interact with Grok-powered recommendation feeds. If you provide thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback on a response, X may still use that specific input for training. To go further, protect your posts. The path is Settings and privacy, then Privacy & Safety, then Audience and tagging, then Protect your posts. Private accounts are excluded from Grok training sets and search query responses.
You can also clear previous prompts by opening Privacy & Safety, selecting Data sharing and personalization, choosing Grok, and selecting Delete Conversation History. X removes deleted conversations within 30 days unless legal retention rules apply. For translation, X's post translation help page describes a manual Translate post prompt and cites Google's translation service.
Threads and Reddit Generative Features
Threads and Reddit handle generative features differently, with Threads relying on chatbot integration and Reddit building summarization directly into search.
Threads
On May 12, 2026, the official Threads account announced testing for asking Meta AI questions on Threads. Two days later, the automated @meta.ai chatbot account claimed users cannot fully disable Meta AI on Threads, stating it appears when tagged or when tapping the assistant button. The chatbot post cited a navigation path through Settings, Privacy, Meta AI, and Suggestions in feed. Meta has not verified or published this path on any official help center page, so users cannot rely on it as a confirmed setting. If you want to explore text-based social platforms with fewer automated tools, see our explainer on Facebook alternatives.
Reddit integrates summarization directly into its search engine. Reddit's AI search documentation explains that the feature synthesizes answers from public posts and comments. The feature is opt-in per query rather than automatic: pressing enter delivers standard community search results, while selecting the Ask option generates an automated summary. Reddit provides no user setting to disable the Ask button, and community moderators cannot exclude their forums from AI search indexing. Content from private, quarantined, and mature communities is excluded automatically.
Reddit has also given Google and OpenAI access to its Data API. On February 22, 2024, Google announced an expanded partnership granting access to Reddit's Data API to train models and display content. On May 16, 2024, an OpenAI partnership announcement confirmed API access to Reddit content to assist AI tools in understanding community discussions.
Meta Apps, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat and Pinterest
Several major networks offer narrow controls over assistant visibility, audio tracks, and content feeds without providing complete system-wide toggles.
On WhatsApp, WhatsApp documentation confirms Meta AI is an optional service. WhatsApp says Meta can read only messages that mention @Meta AI or that people choose to share with Meta AI, and cannot read other messages in personal chats. You can delete individual chats with Meta AI, but the WhatsApp FAQ describes no way to remove the Meta AI button. Our guide on how to remove Meta AI from WhatsApp has the WhatsApp steps. For the other two Meta apps, see how to turn off Meta AI on Facebook and how to turn off AI on Instagram.
On Instagram and Facebook, Meta uses adult public posts and comments to train internal models. Under Meta's European training policy announced in April 2025, European Union residents can submit an objection form to stop this processing. For Meta AI across all of Meta's apps, see our explainer on how to turn off Meta AI. Our review of Instagram alternatives compares other photo apps.
YouTube adds automatically dubbed audio tracks to some videos. According to YouTube's auto-dubbing help resource, videos with automated tracks carry an auto-dubbed label in the description box. YouTube's audio track instructions explain how to switch audio: select Settings in the video player, tap Audio track, and choose your preferred language. You can read full walkthrough steps in our guide on how to turn off auto dubbing on YouTube.
Snapchat places an automated conversational assistant directly into user message feeds. Snapchat's My AI support article details how to unpin the assistant. Press and hold My AI in your feed, select Chat and Notification Settings, and choose Unpin Conversation or Clear from Chat Feed. Clearing the chat removes the thread from your view, but does not delete previously shared data. For the full steps, read our article on how to turn off AI on Snapchat.
TikTok and Pinterest provide feed-filtering mechanisms. On November 19, 2025, TikTok announced a test of an AI-generated content control in its Manage topics feature. The control lets viewers choose how much AI-generated content appears in their For You feeds. For platform details, read our guide on how to turn off AI on other platforms.
Pinterest provides two distinct controls. Under an update announced in late 2025, Pinterest allows users to tune recommendations to see fewer generative Pins across categories like art, beauty, fashion, and home decor. Separately, Pinterest's generative AI settings documentation details a training opt-out. Users can open Settings, select Privacy and data, and toggle off Use your data to train Pinterest Canvas at any time. For image discovery without synthetic generation, review our list of Pinterest alternatives without AI.
Bluesky takes a different operational approach. The official Bluesky account stated on November 15, 2024 that it does not train generative AI on user content. Bluesky says it uses AI for moderation and the Discover feed, and that none of these are generative AI systems trained on user content. In a subsequent statement on November 27, 2024, Bluesky outlined plans for external developer consent preferences. Bluesky also published a proposal on user intents for data reuse. The proposal has not shipped, and it compares the mechanism to robots.txt: it carries ethical weight but is not legally enforceable.
What "Opting Out" Does and Does Not Cover
Turning off training settings or hiding interface elements limits specific uses of your data, but it does not erase your historical digital footprint. LinkedIn states clearly that disabling its generative training toggle does not affect training cycles that have already executed.
Opting out also leaves internal recommendation algorithms intact. On X, opting out of Grok data sharing does not prevent production models from learning through standard use when you interact with algorithmically ranked feeds. On LinkedIn, the primary toggle governs content generation only, meaning LinkedIn continues training models that personalize your LinkedIn experience or handle security and anti-abuse.
Finally, direct feedback channels bypass general training opt-outs. Both LinkedIn and X say they may still train models on feedback you submit, such as a thumbs up or down, even after you opt out. For wider privacy steps, read our guide on how to protect your privacy online. Parents can start with our guide to social media for parents, and our directory of AI-free apps lists apps without built-in AI.
Who Should Keep Default Settings
Keep the X defaults if you want your public posts to show up when people ask Grok questions. Protecting your posts on X stops them from being used to train Grok and from being surfaced in answers to user queries. The training opt-outs cost you less. LinkedIn and X both say their generative AI features stay usable after you opt out. Reddit's AI search runs only when you tap Ask, and YouTube lets you switch audio tracks per video, so neither needs a setting changed.
What Would Change Our Verdict
Our assessment that social media platforms lack comprehensive AI controls will change if major networks introduce unified off switches. If Meta ships one setting that hides Meta AI and opts accounts out of training worldwide across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Threads, we will update the table. We will also revise it if X documents a way to remove the Grok icon or if Reddit adds a setting to turn off AI search.
FAQ
Can I permanently turn off AI on social media?
No, major social networks do not provide a master switch to turn off artificial intelligence completely. Platforms allow you to opt out of certain model training programs or hide specific chat interfaces, but internal algorithms for moderation and recommendation remain active.
Can you just turn AI off?
Mostly no. None of the platforms covered here documents a single switch that removes all AI. You can opt out of AI training on LinkedIn, X and Pinterest, and LinkedIn and X both say their AI features stay usable after you opt out.
Is it possible to opt out of AI?
Yes, you can opt out of generative AI training on platforms like LinkedIn, X, and Pinterest through their privacy settings. European Union users can also submit an objection form to stop Meta from training models on their public posts.
Is there any way to block AI?
You can block specific assistant interactions by unpinning Snapchat My AI, avoiding the Ask button on Reddit, and switching YouTube audio tracks away from auto-dubbed versions. None of these companies documents a way to block the models that rank their feeds.
Which social media apps let you opt out of AI training?
LinkedIn, X, and Pinterest provide account settings to opt out of future generative AI model training. Bluesky states that it does not train generative models on user content, while Meta provides a training objection form specifically for users in the European Union.
