How to Turn Off AI on Instagram, Surface by Surface
Instagram documents no toggle to turn off Meta AI or hide the search bar shortcut, but you can clear conversation histories and restrict reuse.
Can You Turn Off AI on Instagram?
Instagram's help pages document no setting that turns Meta AI off or removes it from the app. Every guide we write starts from a platform's own help pages, so each step below quotes the menu names Instagram publishes.
As documented in Instagram's guide on using Meta AI, Meta AI "currently isn't available to everyone." Where it is available, it appears in the search bar and in your messages. You can delete the Meta AI chat and wipe Meta's copy of it with /reset-ai or /reset-all-ais. You can also skip opt-in tools like Restyle and, in the EU and UK, object to AI training.
What You Can Control on Instagram, Surface by Surface
Instagram documents controls for Meta AI chats, content reuse and AI labels. Its AI tools in Stories are opt-in, and it documents no control for the search bar.
Use these controls on each surface:
- Direct messages: You don't have to start a Meta AI chat. If you already have one, delete it from your inbox. In group chats, Meta AI responds when you or another participant types "@" and picks Meta AI. When someone mentions @Meta AI, messages from the past 30 days are used to provide responses.
- Search bar: Per Instagram's search support steps, you reach Meta AI by going to Explore or your inbox and tapping the search bar at the top. Instagram's help page documents no setting to hide the "Ask Meta AI" prompt, the suggested prompts, or the Meta AI button next to the search bar. You can choose not to tap suggested prompts or submit generative questions. Instagram's Search help page doesn't mention Meta AI. It points to the Meta Transparency Center for how an AI system selects, ranks and delivers search results.
- Story creation and media tools: Generative editing tools in Stories require active user selection. According to the Instagram Restyle announcement, applying changes requires selecting an image, tapping the restyle icon in the top tray, and selecting Add, Remove, or Change. Additional visual features noted in the Muse Image announcement add more than 30 AI-powered effects for Stories.
- Account reuse settings: To stop others from remixing your public visuals into their assets, update your profile settings. Per Instagram's sharing and reuse documentation, open Profile and tap Menu in the top right. Below How others can interact with you, tap Sharing and reuse. Below Allow people to create with and reuse your content, tap Toggle off next to Posts or Reels. The help page doesn't describe this as an AI setting; it controls reuse by other Instagram accounts. Setting an account to private automatically stops anyone from reusing your feed videos, reels, and photos.
- Content labels: Creators must disclose photorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio created or altered digitally. As detailed in Instagram's AI content labeling rules, you can apply this when creating a post by tapping Toggle next to Add AI label. Instagram displays these markers as "AI Info", per the Meta labeling impact report. The Instagram creators blog says Instagram is renaming the AI creator label to AI-generated profile. Instagram will limit the reach of profiles that feature an AI-generated person and don't add the label.

Deleting Your Meta AI Chats on Instagram
You can delete Meta's copy of your messages with a chat command, then delete the chat from your inbox. After a reset, Meta AI won't remember the earlier messages, though you still see your copy until you delete the chat.
To delete Meta's copy and then the chat itself, follow these steps:
- Open the specific conversation thread with Meta AI in your direct messages.
- Type /reset-ai in the chat and send it. According to the Meta Privacy Center AI dialogue guide, this deletes the AI's copy of your messages and the previous context of the conversation. Meta AI then won't remember earlier messages.
- To reset every AI on Instagram, including AIs in group chats you're in, type /reset-all-ais and send it. Per Instagram's AI chat help instructions, you can also send /ai-options to review additional commands for deleting information about you from a conversation.
- Delete the Meta AI chat from your inbox using Instagram's delete chat steps. Instagram's setup page confirms that permanently deleting the chat removes previous messages so they are no longer available if a new conversation starts.
Tapping More information in the top right of the Meta AI chat lets you share the AI with others or search for messages it sent. The current help page lists no mute option in that menu.
What Meta Uses for AI Training From Instagram
Meta trains its AI on public posts, photos, captions and your chats with Meta AI. Whether you can object depends on where you live.
Meta's broad data practices, outlined in the Meta Generative AI Privacy policy and the Meta Privacy Policy, include public posts, photos, captions and your interactions with Meta AI. Meta says it does not use the content of private messages with friends and family to train its AIs. The exception is when you or someone in the chat shares those messages with Meta AI. Non-users can also have likenesses processed if their image appears in content uploaded by another user.
Your ability to object depends on your legal jurisdiction:
- European Union users: Per the Meta European operations release, people in the EU receive notifications that link to an objection form. They can use it to object to AI training on their data at any time. Meta does not train on public data from accounts belonging to users under the age of 18 in the European Union.
- United Kingdom users: As detailed in the Meta United Kingdom documentation, adults in the UK receive in-app notifications about how to access an objection form. Meta trains on public posts, photos and captions from adult accounts there. Data from accounts of individuals under 18 in the United Kingdom is excluded.
- Other jurisdictions: Meta's newsroom posts describe objection forms only for the EU and UK. Users worldwide can access an external data form via the Meta third-party AI inquiry form to raise concerns regarding personal details derived from external third-party sources rather than on-platform posts. A Messenger help page links a general objection form with no regional qualifier, but the form requires an active Facebook account. Whether it accepts submissions from outside the EU and UK is unclear.
Since December 16, 2025, Meta uses your interactions with Meta AI to personalize recommendations and commercial ads across feeds in most regions, according to the Meta recommendation updates notice. While sensitive categories such as health, politics, and religious beliefs are excluded from ad matching, general conversations influence suggested reels. Teens and Meta AI on Instagram
Meta has paused teen access to AI characters and lets supervising parents see the topics their teen asks Meta AI about.
According to the Meta teen AI safety release, Meta temporarily paused teens' access to existing AI characters globally in a January 23, 2026 update. Teens keep access to Meta's AI assistant with default, age-appropriate protections. Meta's earlier October 17, 2025 plan said parents could turn off their teen's access to one-on-one chats with AI characters entirely.
An update from the Meta parent supervision newsroom describes a new Insights tab in supervision. The Insights tab is rolling out first in the US, UK, Australia, Canada and Brazil, with supervising parents globally to follow. Supervising parents can see the topics their teen has asked Meta AI about in the last seven days. Parents seeking broader platform settings can also explore our index on social media safety for families.
What You Cannot Turn Off
Several Meta AI features on Instagram have no documented off switch.
Instagram's help pages document no way to turn off these:
- The "Ask Meta AI" prompt and shortcut icon in the Explore and inbox search bars.
- Use of your public posts and photos for AI training, unless you are in the EU or UK and object. Eligibility elsewhere is unclear.
- Ad and content personalization based on your Meta AI chats, in the regions where the December 16, 2025 change applies.
- Meta AI replies when other participants tag @Meta AI in a group chat you're in.

Who This Setup Does Not Serve
Skipping Instagram's AI tools does not suit creators who use Restyle or Muse Image effects in Stories.
Restyle edits a photo from a typed prompt or a preset effect, so you lose that if you avoid it. Profiles that feature an AI-generated person still need the AI-generated profile label, or Instagram limits their reach.
What Would Change Our Configuration Guidance
Our assessment that Meta AI cannot be turned off on Instagram would change if Meta introduced an account-level preference to hide the search shortcut and turn off Meta AI. Instagram's current help pages describe no such preference.
If Meta confirmed that users everywhere can use the training objection form its newsroom posts describe for EU and UK accounts, our guidance would point readers to that form. Until then, the reset commands, deleting the Meta AI chat, the reuse toggle and a private account are the controls Instagram documents.
